Dragonflies

.... and finally,

I will try not to be too mushy but please overlook any mushiness that may creep in.

Thank you to everyone for your good wishes and generous presents.

Having spent 25 years of my career a a senior leader in schools, I was fortunate, for so many reasons, to be able to finish my career doing what I entered the profession to do - being in the classroom enabling children to learn.

I have been blessed to have had such a lovely group of children as my final class in a school where everyone starts from the premise that it is about the children first and always! So to my colleagues, the children and you the parents and carers, my heartfelt thanks and sincere best wishes for the future.

All the best

Matthew

Term 6 Week 7

Hello, I hope that this has not turned out to be more than 'a bit of a blustery' * weekend for you.

Well here we are at the start of the final week of the school year.

On Monday Dragonflies will be able to watch the Year 6 vrs. Adult Basketball match. Recent form does not bode well for Year 6.

Tuesday sees our music celebration assembly in which the children will be able to showcase some of the songs they have learnt this year to the other classes.

Wednesday is the whole-school visit to Wingham Wildlife Park. While the forecast is currently looking like it will be dry, please check on the day and send your child with suitable coat/hat to go with their school uniform and packed lunch.

Thursday is the day when the Dojo Picnic is held for those children who have earned over 100 Dojos in Terms 5 and 6.

On Friday morning, the Leavers' Service will take place at All Saints' Church. School will close at 14:00.

Home Learning

I will not be setting any spellings or multiplication facts for the final week of the year. [Cue sound of children cheering.] However, all of the online learning is still available. [A mix of cheers and groans are heard in the background.]

In TTRockstars I have set the tables for the children to focus on during the summer break. These settings will only apply to Garage and Arena game modes.

I will assign more books in Bug Club tomorrow. The children are welcome to play whichever games take their fancy.

The same applies to MyMaths. We have covered all of the topics for the year, so the children should be able to access the learning across the board.

Please make sure that all school reading books and reading Record Books are back in school on Wednesday morning. The summer break is used to check what we have and identify where replacement/new books need to purchased.

I think that covers all the key events for this week.

Home Learning over Easter

The children have had some learning activities for the Easter break put into their Home Learning Books. [Some have brought home loose sheets to stick into books that are at home - thanks, in anticipation for your help with this.]

We will send home fresh reading books for the break for those children who bring in their current books tomorrow [Friday].

It would be good for all the children to read at least two books on Bug Club over the next two weeks. One helpful aspects of the online books is that there is a question at the end of every page designed to help the children think about what they have read. Passwords are in the Reading Record Book.

Term 4 Week 2

Good morning, on what is a bright morning with a strange yellow object in the sky!

Mymaths

Hopefully, you were given a letter about Mymaths - the school's new online maths learning platform. The children's login details are stuck into their reading record book. [Some of the children said that their reading record book was at home, so I would ask that you make sure they stick in the piece of paper they were given.] I have posted a fractions activity, which will be available from Tuesday 28th February. It is my intention to copy the task into the children's Home Learning books.

Home Learning Books

Please make sure that your child's Home Learning book is returned to school by Tuesday of each week - even if the tasks in the book have not been completed.

Next term, the children in Year 4 will take their tables check. They have been working hard to learn the multiplication facts and build up the speed at which they answer correctly. It is really encouraging to see how many have an average response time of less than six seconds [the time they are allowed in the tables check]. Thank you for your support with this.

Science: This week we finished off our learning about states of matter by investigating a non-Newtonian material called 'oobleck'. Oobleck is made by mixing cornflour and water. If you leave it alone, it behaves like a liquid but quickly changes if you squeeze, poke or hit it. We tried using oobleck to protect an egg that was thrown out of a window. The outcome can be seen on the playground.

Today we carried out a reliable test to see which was the runnier liquid. Sadly, Mr Crick would not let us try the honey or the tomato ketchup!

We also made our own lava lamps using water, cooking oil and a fizzy vitamin tablet. Mr Crick assured us that there was a lot of science here but we enjoyed looking at the bubbles!

Rock Relics and Rumbles: The attached Knowledge Organiser contains all of the key learning the children will be covering in the topic up to Easter. a copy will be sent to you in the Home Learning books.

Happy 2023!

I hope that you all had a good break. My thanks to those who were so kind as to give me a present. My family certainly enjoyed the seasonal spirit of sharing the consumable items!

Our topic for the Spring Terms is Rocks, Relics and Rumbles.

In the Rocks, Relics and Rumbles project, the children will learn about the different layers of the Earth, including plate tectonics and their potential effects on the Earth's surface. They will investigate different types of rock to learn about their uses and properties. They will also investigate soil and fossils, including learning about the work of Mary Anning. They will have the opportunity to use maps to learn about the lines of latitude and longitude and a compass to learn about the cardinal and intercardinal points. They will also learn about volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis and the long and short-term consequences that these can have.

English and Maths

Our foci for maths will be multiplication, length and perimeter, while in English we will be focussing on a fiction text in the first Spring Term and a narrative in the first person for the second Spring Term.

Our multiplication facts will concentrate on the combinations which have scored the least well on TT Rock Stars for the chosen table or tables for the week. A printed version of the multiplication facts of the week will also be in the children's Home Learning books.

Educational Visit to Canterbury

The children had a great, if slightly damp, day visiting Canterbury Cathedral and The Salvation Army. Our thanks to the Cathedral Education Team and guides and Captain Gavin Friday. They were a real credit to the school in the way they took part in the learning activities, responded to the adults they met and their behaviour throughout the day. Here are some pictures of our day.

Half Term Break

Term One is now done and I hope you have a good break.

It was lovely to meet with you for the Parent Consultation Evenings. I found the conversations very helpful as we seek to support the children's learning.

A piece of home learning for the break has been set and is in your child's Home Learning Book. If they were away on the last day, you will be able to find the task attached below.

Thank you for all your support and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday 31st October.

School Council Elections - As part of our learning about British values we held elections for the posts of School Council Representatives. Each candidate had to give a speech before we decided where to place our vote. We were careful to do as the Returning Officer told us!

Harvest 2022 For the first time in a couple of years we held our Harvest Festival at the church. we also collected food for Faversham Food Bank. Thank you for your donations.

Christmas Cards

With luck, the children will have mentioned that they will be designing Christmas cards this week. I asked them to have a think about what design they would like to draw for the front of a card, over the weekend. My plan is they they will draw the image on Monday afternoon. If you pick up this message before they come to school on Monday, please remind them that they may like to do a draft at home.

The designs will be sent off and you will receive proof-copies in time for orders to be placed.

Ho ho ho!

I will also be including a home-learning activity which will usually linked to our topic for the term. [It is Invasion, by the way.]

As you will see from the newsletter, children will be wearing PE kit on Mondays and Wednesdays. from Monday 12th September Dragonflies will be going swimming. More on this during the week.
