What is the Graveney Curriculum? 

At Graveney Primary School, we believe that every child deserves a curriculum that inspires curiosity, nurtures confidence and develops a lifelong love of learning.

Our 'This is Us' Curriculum has been carefully designed around our vision and values. It reflects who we are as a school and what we want every child to experience during their time with us. We want our children to leave Graveney as kind, respectful, resilient and knowledgeable young people who are ready for the next stage of their education and beyond.

As a small rural school, we make the most of our unique setting. Learning extends beyond the classroom through outdoor experiences, exploration of nature and opportunities to develop independence, creativity and wellbeing. Reading sits at the heart of everything we do because we believe it opens doors to every area of learning and helps children develop the confidence to explore the world around them.

Our curriculum encourages children to ask questions, think deeply, solve problems, work collaboratively and celebrate their individuality. Alongside academic success, we place equal importance on developing character, positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging, ensuring every child feels known, valued and supported.

High-quality learning for every child

To ensure children receive a broad, balanced and ambitious education, we use a range of nationally recognised programmes that are carefully chosen because they are evidence-based and proven to support excellent outcomes.

For our wider curriculum subjects, including Art, Design Technology, Computing, Music and PSHE, we use Kapow Primary as the foundation for our curriculum. Kapow ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum and provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Reception through to Year 6. However, our curriculum is never 'off the shelf'. Our teachers carefully adapt and enrich each unit to reflect the interests, needs and experiences of our children, making learning meaningful and relevant to life at Graveney.

Reading

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, children learn to read through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. This systematic approach helps children build confidence, fluency and accuracy as they begin their reading journey.

As children become fluent readers, they continue to develop a love of books through whole-class reading, carefully chosen class texts, our library and the Accelerated Reader (AR) programme. AR helps children select books that are well matched to their reading ability while encouraging independence, enjoyment and regular reading practice. Our aim is for every child to become a confident reader who reads not simply because they can, but because they love to.

Mathematics

We want every child to develop a secure understanding of mathematics and the confidence to use it in everyday life.

Across the school, we teach mathematics using the White Rose Maths approach, which builds understanding step by step through carefully sequenced learning. Children are encouraged to reason mathematically, explain their thinking and solve problems rather than simply memorising procedures.

In our Early Years, we also incorporate the NCETM Mastering Number programme. This develops children's understanding of number through practical experiences, mathematical talk and exploration, helping them build strong number sense from the very beginning of their education.

A curriculum that grows with our children

Whilst we follow carefully chosen programmes to ensure high standards and consistency, our curriculum is always centred around our children.

Our mixed-age classes, small school community and strong relationships mean that teachers know every child exceptionally well. This enables us to adapt learning, provide additional challenge where needed and ensure every child is supported to achieve their full potential.
